ArkivNord is built primarily from public information maintained by Swedish authorities, including Bolagsverket and Statistics Sweden (SCB), together with annual reports filed by companies.
We structure, connect and explain this information so it becomes easier to search and compare. Some figures, ratios and classifications are calculated by ArkivNord from the underlying data. The original public records and company filings remain the authoritative sources.
Public data is often presented for registration or statistical purposes, not for someone trying to understand what a company does, find comparable businesses or identify a potential customer, supplier or partner.
We try to make that information more useful through plain-language explanations, flexible filters, comparisons and new ways of grouping companies. Where we create our own classifications or indicators, we want the reasoning, inputs and limitations to be easy to follow. See about our classifications for the details.
Swedish companies are commonly grouped using SNI codes. They're useful, but based on registered activities that are often broad or outdated and don't always describe what a company actually does today. A company can also have several activities that a handful of codes can't really capture.
ArkivNord uses SNI as a starting point, not the final answer. We're working on additional, explainable classifications that better reflect what companies actually do.
Our financial dataset currently covers annual reports filed digitally in iXBRL, a machine-readable format. It doesn't yet include every company or financial year, particularly where reports were only submitted as PDFs or scanned documents.
We're working to expand this. Until then, missing information should be read as data we don't have yet, not evidence that a company had no activity. Wherever possible, ArkivNord shows the relevant reporting period and makes gaps in coverage visible rather than quietly filling them with estimates.
An authority registering a filing doesn't guarantee that every figure in it is correct.
In a 2024 investigation of digital annual reports, journalist Jens Nylander found contradictory duplicate values, incomplete balance sheets, zeroed reports and other deficiencies. It's a good reminder that machine-readable data still needs validation, and that conflicting information can't always be resolved automatically. He has also documented cases of incorrect or allegedly falsified annual reports.
ArkivNord checks and structures data where it can, but we can't guarantee that every public filing is complete or correct. Important decisions should always be checked against the original annual report and other relevant sources.
The EU's Open Data Directive and Implementing Regulation on high-value datasets name company information, documents and accounts as an important category of public data. These high-value datasets are meant to be reusable free of charge, in machine-readable formats, through APIs and bulk download.
Bolagsverket and SCB now provide some basic company information free of charge. Broader access to company information and many documents, though, still comes with API fees and document charges. At scale, those costs make comprehensive historical coverage prohibitively expensive for a small independent service.
We support broader, consistent and genuinely reusable access to public company data. Transparency is strongest when journalists, researchers, businesses and independent developers can inspect and build on the same underlying information.
